Update from Curtis L. Brown Jr. Airfield – June 2024

Major Construction Projects Transform Curtis L. Brown, Jr. Airport

Curtis L. Brown, Jr. Airport has been buzzing with activity this year as major construction projects have been underway, transforming the airport’s infrastructure and capabilities. Thanks to generous grants totaling $5.7 million, significant improvements have been made, enhancing safety and efficiency for all airport users.

  • Runway Replacement: The runway replacement project, completed just before Christmas in 2023, marked a significant milestone for the airport. This crucial upgrade ensures smoother operations and improved safety for all aircraft.
  • Apron and Taxiway Replacement: Following the runway replacement, attention turned to the apron area and taxiways where transverse cracking and poor surface conditions necessitated their replacement. The new apron, featuring a redesigned layout, will facilitate the simultaneous fueling of two aircraft, enhancing safety and efficiency during fueling operations.
  • Taxiway “C” Reconstruction: In response to new FAA requirements, funding was secured for the reconstruction of Taxiway “C”. This $805,000 project, repurposed from forfeited funds from another NC State aviation project, will commence on July 1, 2024. While some runway closures near the Runway Safety Area (RSA) will occur during construction, accommodations will be made for requested landings with a 24-hour notice period.

Exciting Developments at Curtis L. Brown, Jr. Airport

In addition to ongoing construction projects, Curtis Brown Airport is proud to announce exciting new developments:

  • Corporate Airpark Grant: The NCDOT Department of Aviation awarded Curtis L. Brown, Jr. Field a $2.5 million grant for the design and construction of a portion of the New Corporate Airpark. This initiative will house the Sovereign Aerospace flight training and maintenance facility, as well as the Vulcanair North American aircraft manufacturing facility. Construction of taxiways, aprons, and infrastructure will be underway by July 2024, with completion expected by the first quarter of 2025.
  • Sovereign Aerospace Maintenance Facility: Sovereign Aerospace will commence full-service maintenance operations onsite beginning June 15, 2024. Located at 370 Airport Road, this facility will cater to both General Aviation and Corporate Aircraft, further enhancing the airport’s service offerings.
  • Ace Academy Summer Camp: The second annual Ace Academy will take place at Curtis Brown Field from June 18 to 21. Sponsored by Campbell Oil Company Aviation Division, Sovereign Aerospace, and the NCDOT Division of Aviation, this camp offers middle school students a unique opportunity to explore aeronautics, aircraft design, aviation careers, simulator training, and hands-on drone flying hosted by NC State University.
